Renewable Energy Solutions: Unprecedented Savings Potential

RSL Fiber Systems is actively engaged in research and development of a variety of next generation technologies. With potential efficiencies up to 10 times that of photovoltaic technology, RSL Fiber Systems’ Fiber Optic Solar (FOSTM) prototype may be the key enabling technology that can save the U.S. commercial market nearly $5 billion in annual energy costs.

FOSTM technology can deliver the powerful illumination of the sun without the need to first convert the sun’s energy to electricity. Considering that lighting represents more than 40 percent of energy consumption in commercial buildings alone – and contributes as much as 30 percent of the emission of greenhouse gases – investment in this technology is vital.

While photovoltaic technology converts the sun’s energy into electricity via solar panels and then converts that electricity back into light, FOSTM technology dramatically increases efficiency by significantly reducing the need to produce electricity for illumination. Sunlight is collected and directly delivered via a system of reflectors, optical fibers and luminaires.
